Care Instructions

At Harner Orthodontics, we specialize in efficient and comfortable orthodontic care for all our patients. Through our high-quality orthodontic treatments, such as braces and Invisalign, we can provide you with a straighter and even healthier smile. However, a healthy smile isn’t purely attained just by slapping on a pair of braces or Invisalign. Beautiful smiles require constant care on a daily basis through brushing and flossing. These are considered to be the cornerstones to great oral hygiene. By brushing and flossing properly, you can keep problematic dental conditions like tooth decay, gum disease, and staining at bay. As your trusted Huntington Beach, CA orthodontist, we’re happy to provide you with some instructions on how to use these techniques effectively to keep your teeth strong and healthy.

How to Properly Brush Your Teeth

The most important thing you can do for your teeth is brush them correctly and to do so, we recommend the following:

  • Start by dabbing a pea-sized amount of toothpaste onto your toothbrush.

  • Get the brush wet and then run it over your teeth in a back-and-forth or circular motion, two or three teeth at a time.

  • Make sure to brush every surface of your teeth and spend at least two minutes doing so. If you’re wearing braces, be careful not to accidentally hit them with the back of your brush. This can potentially harm them.

How to Properly Floss Your Teeth

To properly floss your teeth, we recommend following these simple steps:

  • First, wind a length of floss around your middle fingers.

  • Grab the floss with your thumbs and index fingers and slide the floss between your teeth.

  • Make sure to wrap the floss around your tooth and run it up and down the groove a few times.

  • Continue doing this for each space between your teeth.

If you have braces and you’re using a floss threader, you should follow these steps:

  • Thread the floss through the eye of the threader.

  • Run the threader under your archwire and pull the floss through.

  • When the floss is underneath the archwire, floss your teeth just the same way as you normally do.

  • Continue doing this with a new section of floss for each space between your teeth.
