How to Keep Your Braces Safe This Halloween

Halloween is just around the corner, and we know that many of our patients are getting excited to dress up as their favorite ghosts and scary monsters. Here at Harner Orthodontics, however, there's one part of Halloween that truly does scare us - the candy! While Halloween can be a very fun holiday, the hard, sticky, and sugary candies that are its hallmark pose a serious threat to braces. These candies can easily get stuck in wires and brackets, damaging or breaking braces and leading to costly repairs. That's why for this blog, we're going to give you some tips on how you can keep your or your child's braces safe this Halloween.

Play It Safe with Your Braces

The most important thing is also the hardest: avoid candy. We know that sounds like a difficult task, but it's absolutely crucial to the health of your orthodontic appliances. Hard candies like jolly ranchers and lollipops pose an obvious danger, as one misplaced bite can easily dislodge brackets and break wires, destroying your braces and spelling out a long, costly repair process. Sticky candies also pose a threat, as they can get stuck in between wires and may also pull brackets loose from teeth. Finally, any sugary candy also needs to be avoided - sugar interacts with bacteria in your mouth to form acids which attack the teeth, eating away at protective enamel and contributing to dental decay and cavities. It's important to know that you're extra susceptible to tooth decay while you're receiving orthodontic treatment, so really do be sure to avoid those candies. We know it's hard, but trust us - you'll be glad you did when you have your beautiful, healthy new smile!
